Day 15

Up early, packed and headed north by 7:40 AM with Georgia's Fort Mountain State Park our ultimate destination, a mere 476 miles away.

Our first stop was nearby, only 36 miles from St. George Island,  in Port St. Joe where we returned to the Sand Dollar for breakfast; I can resist that Southern comfort food.

I was so excited about the  biscuit and gravy before I remembered to take a photo!

The route I planned for the day took us into Alabama.  Roll Tide!   On a previous spring trip we discovered the town of Eufala, located on a bluff above the Chattahoochee River, its historic district  features many beautiful antebellum homes.

The wealth behind Eufaula's stunning historic homes originated from the lucrative antebellum cotton trade and steamboat commerce on the Chattahoochee River. Wealthy planters built these grand mansions in town rather than on rural plantations so their families could enjoy the benefits of urban society.

The rest of our day was spent in the van.  It was almost culture shock when as we approached Atlanta.
Eight lanes in each direction.  Not something I would ever want to experience every day.

Around 6 pm we arrived in Dalton, Georgia, at Cyra's restaurant.  It's located in a beautiful building that was constructed in the 1930's.   Like most of our restaurant choices on this trip, we've been to Cyra's before and loved it.

Leaving Cyra's we had a relatively short drive to our campsite at Fort Mountain State Park.  The campground was very busy, lots of families with children since it was the weekend, and lots of campfires burning.  Despite the crowded sits, it was very quiet, and sleep came quickly.

Campsite #30, our favorite.
