We were on the road by 7 AM, and headed for Long Beach Island, but our first stop was the Coffee Lab in downtown Tarrytown. Gotta have that morning joe.
Since we’ve made this trip many times, we quickly discovered that traffic is lightest on Sunday mornings, and today was no exception. Our route was very simple: cross the Hudson on the Tappan Zee bridge, turn left onto the Garden State Parkway. Continue south. That's it.
Our first stop was Marvel’s bakery whose donuts are to die for. I’ve been enjoying their delicacies since my earliest childhood, and can never pass up an opportunity to indulge. One of my summer chores while visiting my grandparents' cottage in Beach Haven Gardens was to pick up the donuts at Marvel’s. A baker’s dozen for 55 cents!
From Marvel’s our next stop was Southwick’s Marina where my grandfather kept his boat. The current owner is a third generation Southwick and we had a nice trip down memory lane while Joni sat in the van.
From Southwick’s we drove to the beach where I checked out the waves where my grandparents’ cottage once stood. “The sea was angry my friends.” Our final stop on Long Beach Island was Ron Jon’s Surf shop where I purchased a long sleeve hoodie. I was tempted to buy a drug rug, but that was strongly vetoed.
Leaving LBI we returned to the Garden State Parkway and continued south to Cape May for lunch at the Mad Batter, another favorite eatery of ours. We both ordered eggs benedict, my version included crab, but disappointedly both of our English muffins were very tough, so I think we’ll have to try another restaurant for our next trip.
We arrived at the Cape May Lewes ferry in plenty of time to catch the 2:30 pm ferry, and we landed in Lewes just before 4 pm.
Our home for the next three nights, Henlopen State Park, is just a five minutes ride from the ferry, so when we pulled into our campsite we surprisingly found it occupied! Another couple with a teardrop trailer mistakenly took the wrong site. They offered to move to the site they had reserved, but that would have been a lot of work for them, so we took their site. No big deal.
For dinner we returned to another one of our favorite’s, Matt’s Fish Camp. Joni chose a fish sandwich, and I opted for raw oysters, and shrimp and grits. We were not disappointed at all.
After dinner we returned to our campsite, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. A great day without doubt.

Don't you get tired of going to the same place year after year after year? ( NOT )
ReplyDeleteWe like to “stick to the tried and true.” For us that’s relaxing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking me down memory lane! I loved Tommy Marvel's donuts! I remember walking down there too and watching the donuts being made and then sugared. My favorites were the cinnamon. I remember that Lyman boat and hanging onto the cleat on the bow as we went to the inlet. Great times!! Were you able to stop by the Snack Bar? My favorite, as well. I always got the cheeseburger, a chocolate milkshake and had to have a piece of the chocolate cake! Looking at the current house made me a bit sad. I loved the charm of that bungalow. Enjoy your travels.
