Day 13

We're just half way through our trek through the South.

We started our day at the Sand Dollar Café in Port St. Joe.  This place is unique, reminds me of a restaurant along Route 66. The owner is an obvious fan of Lucile Ball, and almost anything from the 40's and 50's. The cuisine is Southern comfort food for breakfast and lunch.

Cafeteria style, all items freshly made from scratch this morning.

Leaving the Sand Dollar went to a car wash in Port St. Joe.  We've put over 1900 miles on the van in the last two weeks, so there were 1900 miles of bugs on the windshield.  Most are now removed.

We then returned to St. George Island, heading for the beaches of the Dr. Julian G Bruce State Park. The park is relatively new, since the bridge to the island wasn't completed until 1965.  Park facilities weren't completed until 1980.  There's a campground in the park which currently has 60 sites, but will be expanded to 90 once construction, which is starting in July, is finished.  Joni and I have stayed in this campground twice.  Reservations are a real challenge.  There were no vacancies for this week when we tried to book one in January

A day pass for this park costs only $6, the beaches are not crowded and the water is warm.   A day pass at Nauset Beach in Orleans costs $30, the beaches are crowded and the water is freezing.

Guess where we went to dinner?

...and can you guess what I ordered?

Apparently there's a flesh eating bacteria that some oysters carry!

I'm taking my chances.

A view to die for.

Back to our VRBO just in time to watch the sunset.

Good Night
